
Prof. Beata Javorcik, EBRD, Oxford University
Professor Javorcik is a Polish economist currently serving as the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London. She is on leave from the University of Oxford, where she holds the position of Professor of Economics—the first woman appointed to this role.
Academic Career
She is also a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and Director of the International Trade Programme at the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. Her other roles include serving on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the ifo Institute at the University of Munich and the Executive and Supervisory Committee of CERGE-EI in Prague. Her affiliations further include CESifo in Munich, the International Growth Centre in London, and the Centre for Research on Globalization and Economic Policy at the University of Nottingham. Before joining Oxford University, she worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., engaging in research, lending operations, and policy advisory work. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University and her Bachelor’s degree in Economics (Summa cum Laude) from the University of Rochester.
Research Interests
Professor Javorcik specializes in international trade. Her research focuses on the determinants and consequences of foreign direct investment inflows, the impacts of services liberalization, investment promotion programs evaluation, propagation of shocks through production networks, and tariff evasion. Her work has been published in prominent journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of the European Economic Association, Review of Economics and Statistics, European Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of International Economics, and Journal of Development Economics.
